Astrophysicist Dionysios Simopoulos Receives Academy of Athens Award

Astrophysicist Dionysios Simopoulos received the Academy of Athens Award for 2015 in a luminous ceremony on Tuesday evening.
A total of 39 awards were given in three categories: Sciences, Literature and Fine Arts, and Moral and Political Sciences.
The astrophysicist was awarded for his overall contribution to the dissemination and popularization of the science of astronomy and the exemplary operation of the Eugenides Planetarium.
Composers Mimis Plessas, Giorgos Kouroupos and Giorgos Leotsakos were awarded for their enduring and influential work in Greek music.
The ceremony commenced with a speech by President of the Academy of Athens – distinguished physicist Dimitri Nanopoulos – on the utilization of information obtained from the Black Hole, one of the most important discoveries in Physics.
The president of the Academy referred to his recent work with John Ellis and Nikos Mavromatis on attempting to break the Information Code in Black Holes and a new interpretation of “Hawking radiation” using super-string theory.
