Cypriot Presidential Commissioner Optimistic about Locating Shot Down Greek Military Plane

Cypriot Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Issues Photis Photiou has expressed his optimism on Friday that ongoing work will soon unveil a Greek military plane that was shot down by friendly fire during the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Photiou reminded that the second phase of the operation to locate the Noratlas type military transport aircraft aims to discover any possible remains of the Greek airmen on board.
Until now, everything is going according to plan, he said, adding that “we are close to locating the fuselage of the aircraft.”
The plane was a French-built Nord Noratlas transport aircraft of the Greek air force that was on a stealth mission to bring reinforcements for the hard pressed Cypriot National Guard fighting superior Turkish army forces.
It had taken off at night with 28 commandos and a crew of four, and was scheduled to land at the now defunct Nicosia airport that was the focus of fierce fighting.
