Migrants Riot on Greek Island of Kos, 'Situation out of Control' Says Mayor

kos44The migrant situation on the Greek island of Kos is out of control, forcing the mayor to ask for help and riot police arriving from Athens.
There are about 7,000 refugees and illegal migrants already on the Aegean Sea island, with hundreds arriving daily from Turkey. The Kos police tried to transfer about 1,500 of them to camp in a football field but the migrants refused to do so until their documentation was sorted out.
The police tried to push away migrants from the main streets but the migrants resisted. Some even attacked policemen and hurled bottles at passing cars. They were shouting that they wanted to have their papers and leave the island for Athens. They were also shouting that they wanted to be fed.
Kos Mayor Giorgos Kyritsis spoke on Greek TV on Tuesday morning, warning of an imminent bloodshed unless help came from Athens. “Migrants have beaten policemen and they kill each other. There is no more law and order on the island,” he said.
kos54Kyritsis noted that migrants have caused damages on the main coastline avenue of Kos and called on Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to intervene. He also accused Deputy Minister for Immigration Tasia Christodoulopoulou of indiference and incompetence.
The Kos mayor said it is impossible to document all these people. He said there are over 7,000 already on the island with 600-800 arriving daily. He also asked from the Greek government for better guarding of the sea borders.
Kos policemen have resorted to a sit-in protest inside the police station. They refuse to go out and face the rioting migrants unless there are reinforcements from Athens. Two riot police units will arrive from Athens shortly.
