Modern Greek Returned to the University of Toronto this Year

University-of-TorontoAn initiative by the Greek Student Association (GSA) at the University of Toronto’s revived modern Greek classes at the institution this past academic year.

According to The Varsity, the university’s student newspaper, modern Greek classes had not been offered at the school in over ten years. The GSA’s effort gained traction from students, the university’s Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies and Toronto’s Hellenic Heritage Foundation.

“Negotiations were coming to fruition as the university was setting a targeted budget and a preliminary curriculum not just for one language course but for an entire Modern Greek program by late May of 2014,” said Kostas Katsanevas, a former GSA President, who The Varsity describes as “instrumental in the revival of the program.”

The student newspaper quotes a modern Greek instructor Themistoklis Aravossitas, who notes that the university’s modern Greek courses had the highest enrollment rate in the country. The classes were so popular that new courses will be offered this academic year.
