The Chicago National Hellenic Museum hosted the Greek-American renowned author and journalist Nicholas Gage in a fascinating and moving presentation with the title “A Writer’s Odyssey” on June 13.
More than one hundred guests attended the event and listened to Mr Gage recount his experiences as a Greek immigrant, as well as a journalist, investigative reporter, and foreign correspondent for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Associated Press.
Gage was born in a small village in Northern Greece in 1939. In the 1950s he immigrated to the USA where he became a respected and honored journalist. His first two books, “Eleni” and “A Place for Us,” recount a large part of the author’s life.
In “Eleni,” Gage applied his skills as an investigative reporter to narrate how his mother arranged for her children to escape from their village during the Greek Civil War in the 1940s, how she was tortured and executed in retribution by the occupying guerrillas, and how he sought after her killers thirty years later. The book was translated into 32 languages and nominated for best biography by the National Book Critics Circle. In 1984, “Eleni” received the top literary prize from the Royal Society of Literature of Great Britain.
In his next book, “A Place for Us,” he tells his story as an immigrant, while his latest book, “Greek Fire,” is a dual biography of Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis.
Nicholas Gage has been awarded five honorary degrees, including a doctorate in 1985 from Boston University, where he gave the commencement address and established a scholarship fund in memory of his mother. He is an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and serves as President of the Pan-Epirotic Federation.
His presentation was attended by eminent members of the Greek American community including businessman John Calamos and His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of the Metropolis of Chicago.
