First Internet Cat Video Festival to be Held in Athens

cat plays pianoThe first Greek Internet Cat Video Festival is scheduled to be held on Sunday, February 2, at the Six D.o.g.s venue in Athens, Greece. The event which is co-organized by the NGO Nine Lives Greece and the Walker Art Center in the U.S., will be hosted by MTV Greeceā€™s video jockey Jenny Theona, who is widely known for her love of cats.
The festival, which kicks off World Spay Month, aims to raise awareness of the importance of sterilizing stray and domestic animals, so as to contain their population andĀ improve their health and quality of life.
The video, which will be screened at 5.30 and 7 p.m. local time, features a compilation of the funniest and most loved cat videos found all over the Internet. During the event, snacks and cat souvenirs will be available for purchase, the proceeds from which will be entirely used to provide food, sterilization and taking care of stray cats in Athens.
The first Internet Cat Video Festival was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2012. The organizers initially thought that it was a joke. Nobody expected though that the feline internet hype would translate into real, three-dimensional viewers, let alone 10,000 of them flooding the outdoor area of the Walker Art Center, one of the most important centers for contemporary art in the U.S. The success was so huge that the concept traveled to other major U.S. cities like Boston, Chicago, San Diego, Memphis, as well as to Austria, Ireland and Israel.
