Today a crucial general meeting took place between the rectors of the University of Athens and Minister of Education, Kostantinos Arvanitopoulos, who are making efforts to reopen the Higher Educational Institutions (AEI).
The administrators of universities are on strike for 75 days and they will continue to protest, making a new 48-hour strike on November 25-26 in aim to assert their rights, opposing to new measures which lead toward dismissal or mobility of employees. Certainly this will affect student’s lives in a negative way, and may cause them to lose their whole academic semester.
Moreover, a new prosecution research was ordered by the head of the Misdemeanors Prosecutor, Panagiota Fakou for the universities administrative employees and their strike from the 19th of November until today.
Ms. Fakou’s new order for conducting a preliminary examination, like with the two previous strikes that were declared illegal by the Court, goes against State Security in order to ascertain the possible commission of the offense of violating a court decision.
The Prosecution announced that regarding the decision of new strikes of the permanent administrative staff of the University of Athens was illegal, and ordered an urgent preliminary investigation to look into the validity of the accused. The order was given to the Directorate of State Security, who will also investigate if this strike will continue despite the above decision, and if so, any constituent elements of the offense of violating the provision of a judicial decision.
Meanwhile, the Panhellenic Federation of Teaching and Research Staff (POSDEP) resorted to Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, to come in a dialogue among all involved sides in aim to reopen the universities.
Eventually, 1,160 employees will be suspended while the initial number of employees was 1,349.
