Could Crete Be Looking to Secede?

post creteA publication which spread on the Internet about Crete becoming an independent state has caused uproar and police intervention.
According to, it all started on July 5 and seems to have taken on. Political party offices are also alarmed as the publication even mentions names of politicians, while the Athens Security Prosecution of Electronic Crime has already been informed by a top government executive.
This post is more like an April fool’s prank and states that everything will happen on August 1. The publication is based on a “hidden” referendum carried out in Crete, which was never made by any serious company, and on an agreement with the Troika.
“The results of the referendum, which will come into force on August 1, were communicated last February to the Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, by the Regional Governor of Crete, who will serve temporarily as leader of the newly established Cretan State until the announcement of elections on the island.”
The publication also refers, “Both the Greek Government and the Troika agree with the independence of Crete.” It is also mentioned that a confidential report of the IMF, refers that more than 50,000 employees in the public sector are Cretan residents or of Cretan origin.
It is also referred, “The temporary government under the Regional Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, will be also framed by Olga Kefalogianni, Manolis Kefalogiannis, Christos Markogiannakis, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Konstantinos Mitsotakis and Dora Bakogianni, who communicated through a letter to Antonis Samaras that they prefer to keep their Cretan -and not their Greek- citizenship.”
