Many Greeks Prefer Junta To Austerity

junta guysA survey published on the April 21 anniversary of the start of a seven-year military dictatorship that imprisoned, tortured and exiled thousands of people has found that 30 percent of Greeks said life was better during those rigid times than during today’s crushing economic crisis.
The survey was printed on the 46th anniversary of the junta of Colonels who ruled with an iron hand in a repressive regime backed by the United States and added that 59 percent of people believe there was more security during the dictatorship when the military controlled life. Another 46 percent said the quality of life was higher and 24 percent said Greece’s image abroad was better even though the country was nearly isolated then.
The anniversary itself came and went almost unnoticed although a group of junta lovers and apologists gathered to reminisce about what they said were the good old days in Greece. About 2,000 attendees at a commemorative concert, which was also billed as a concert against racism, staged a brief march to central Athens’ Syntagma square and a few hundred, mostly young people, lingered for a while there. Most Greeks ignored the date they considered a sign of ignominy.
The right-wing government of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has been imposing pay cuts, tax hikes and slashed pensions and making moves to silence dissidents by closing down a web site critical of the government.
