Cypriot-Australians Support Homeland

cyprus_flag_wavingWith Cyprus entering what is expected to be a long and hard recession and economic hardship, Cypriots in Australia are rallying in support.

In a message, the High Commissioner of Cyprus in Canberra, Yannis Iacovou said the Archdiocese for Australia will hold a fundraiser on April 7 to support charities in Cyprus.

“I would like to thank His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos over this important initiative which will strengthen in practice the effort made, to relieve the pressing needs of the charity work of the Archbishop of Cyprus.

“As you already know, His Eminence has repeatedly spoken in favor of the Greek Cypriots’ rights and this action highlights for once more the support and solidarity towards suffering Cyprus. ”

The Diaspora of Sydney will hold  an open meeting to discuss in which ways  the community could help. The Cypriot community of the city invited fraternities, organizations and federations throughout the Diaspora, Greek and Cypriot, as well as all their fellow citizens to attend the meeting on April 7 at Stanmore Community Center.

“This meeting is actually a discussion and exchange of opinions, so that we, the Cypriot Diaspora, will find the best and most effective ways to support our brothers back home,” stated the Chairman of the Cyprus community, Michael Christodoulou.
