Cretan Wines Awarded in International Contest

A young Greek woman tastes red Greek wineThe Greek Wine Awards 2013 Contest was held on Feb. 9 – 10 in Bad Dürkheim, Germany. Wines from Crete were especially distinguished with 21 medals for quality and presence.

As noted at an event held in a winery in Chania, Crete for the awarded labels, the Cretan wines proved to be at the top of the public’s choices, since they combine both  quality and competitive prices.

The president of the Cretan Winemakers Network, Nikos Miliarakis, was really satisfied by the Cretan presence in the competition: “It is true that in recent years the Cretan vineyard has made great progress. This effort should be promoted in order that more people be informed. Thus, the initiative for all Cretan winemakers to work together as a team, uniting our forces, was the means to achieve this purpose,” Miiarakis added.

Cretan wines have a long history and tradition since ancient times. According to the “Wines of Crete” website, the vine has known around 4,000 years of systematic cultivation in Crete. No wonder the oldest wine-press (3500 years old) was found in the region of Vathipetro. Homer informs us that, at his time, Cretan wines were renowned throughout the known world. Apart from the 3500-year-old wine-press, impressive amphorae, vast underground wine storage facilities and relevant drawings in all Minoan Palaces provide evidence not only of wine’s central role in the life of the island, but also of the sophistication of the Minoans’ know-how.
