On Feb. 16, the Malaysian authorities prevented Senator Nick Xenophon from entering the country, as according to them he posed “some form of security threat” and so had to be deported immediately.
According to the Herald Sun, Senator Xenophon was leading a group of Australian MPs for a series of meetings about Malaysia’s electoral system. He was meeting with the country’s Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and a senior Government minister.
However, soon after his arrival he was arrested by the authorities, and was initially taken to an interrogation area at the airport where there were holding cells and detainees.
“I was told that I was going to be deported immediately because I posed some form of security threat which I think is both laughable and tragic that the allegation was made and no reason was given. I was only handed this notice as I was leaving last night, as I was being escorted back onto the plane,” said Senator Xenophon.
This is not the first time the he has visited Malaysia. Last year, he was trapped in a massive demonstration that was held in Kuala Lumpur. At the time, the Senator had called on the Australian government to break its silence and condemn the brutal suppression of human rights by the Malaysian regime.
According to the Herald Sun, a tired Senator Xenophon arrived in Melbourne this morning saying he was still scratching his head trying to work out what Malaysian authorities were thinking.
