Guardian Photo Shows Greek Desperation

People-reach-out-reach-ou-008-300x199The photo of the day in the Feb. 6 edition of the British newspaper The Guardian captured the hard times in Greece, a gripping shot showing desperate hands reaching for free fruits and vegetables at a handout by farmers.

As shown in the photo, people were anxiously hoping to get what they good in a scene of chaos that included much pushing and shoving, resulting in one boy being stepped on and needing treatment. It happened in Athens, outside the Ministry of Rural Development and Food at Acharnon Street.

The handout was an attempt by protesting farmers to push their hopes of getting the government to get a 50% price reduction on diesel-powered farm equipment, abolition of the obligatory declaration for cultivation, a Value Added Tax cut from 23% to 6% on their products and agricultural machinery and equipment. The government later offered the farmers a package of concessions but they refused to accept them.
