Greek Eleni Fakos Selected to Australia’s Soccer National Youth Team

Eleni Fakos is a 14-year-old keen soccer player of Greek descent. Her fellow classmates may go to the cinema in the afternoons, but Eleni plays and watches soccer instead. Her passion turned to something more than a hobby since Eleni was selected in the national all-stars teams at the FFA National Youth Championship in Coffs Harbour.

“It’s a great achievement,” Eleni tells Neos Kosmos. “Everyone wishes to get into one of these so it’s a massive achievement for me. I was excited, I am happy and still happy,” she says.

Her favourite football player is Lionel Messi, the star of Barcelona FC. At first, she played with boys in various teams but Eleni tried harder and managed to play in Heidelberg with the seniors in the women’s league.

Young Eleni admits that male football players get more support than female ones, but she believes it’s great being a female football player as people aren’t expecting it.

Greek Eleni Fakos is on her way to having an interview with a US college for a scholarship soon. Despite being so young, she comments that even if she’s unsuccessful for the time being, she has many years ahead to try even harder to achieve her goals.
