French Wine Collector François Audouze Praises Cypriot Wines

Famous French wine collector François Audouze found out about a wine sale in Drouot, France, including different samples of the first half of the 19th century and many bottles of a 1845 grape variety from Cyprus.

As noted by Diaspora Greqcue.com, taking the advice of a friend and wine trader, Audouze bought all of the wine varieties without having even taken a look at them. Later on, he discovered that the Cypriot wine had come from the heritage of a pharmacist from Montpelier, who had bottled the wine flasks himself in 1903.

This was the first time Audouze had come into contact with the wines of Cyprus. Ever since then, he has been praising the Cypriot wine selections for their unique and full taste. “Although it would be absurd to compare wines, it is most obvious that the complexity of the Cypriot wine is by far greater than that of Yquem, which is one of the most famous sweet French wines around the world,” underlines Audouze. “It is a muscatel wine of fine natural delicacy. Its taste of pepper and licorice give a noble and exceptionally delicate taste to it. Its fragrance rising from the empty bottles is particularly strong no matter how many years may pass,” added Audouze.

The French wine collector has repeatedly noticed that the 1845 wine selection from Cyprus grape varieties was the “best wine case” of his life, and he thought this news should be passed on to the Cypriot Embassy in Paris. A counselor of the Cypriot Embassy contacted Audouze and told him that the Republic of Cyprus would like to obtain an empty bottle of this particular 1845 wine selection and showcase it in its wine museum.

The meeting between Audouze and the Cypriot Ambassador to France was immediately scheduled, in which the French wine collector presented the Cypriot delegate with a 1845 bottle. The bottle has already been sent to Limassol, the region where the famous Koumandaria wine is being produced. Audouze has promised to share a bottle of wine with his Cypriot friends next time.
