17-year-old Student Bursts Into Tears Over Bleak Future of Greek Youth

Danae-Arsenia Fillidou, a 17-year-old student from the city of Kavala in northern Greece, burst into tears when she received the award for the best student newspaper at the 19th Panhellenic Student Newspaper Competition organized by the Greek daily Ta Nea.
Due to the dire financial situation, the young student was selected to represent her school at the awarding ceremony. The young girl lost her composure when she mentioned her absent teacher, who chose to give her place to Danae so that the children would get the chance of communicating their own thoughts and emotions on the Greek situation and the future lying ahead of them.
Young Danae delivered her short and precise speech amidst tears of fear; fear of what is in store for her generation in a country full of uncertainty and lack of options and chances.
“We feel like we’re being wasted. We are afraid that we will be wasted in our own country. We want to have a future here in our Greece,” said Danae, bringing tears to everyone’s eyes and earning warm applause from the audience.
Several surveys have revealed that the majority of the younger Greek generation shares the same pessimistic outlook on the future as the student from Kavala, while many consider leaving the debt-stricken country in search of better life prospects abroad.
