Austrian fans of late Greek director Theodoros Angelopoulos have the chance to watch some of his movies at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna, from April 27 to May 7.
The exhibition titled “Travels in Greece” marks news about the Greek director’s death as “shock. The Austrian museum will present eight movies of Angelopoulos, mostly those filmed during the 70’s and 80’s.
According to Austrians, Angelopoulos was “the giant of world cinema,” and his movies have a perennial value so they decided to present the most typical work of the Greek man, beginning from “Reconstruction,” which was his film debut.
“Days of ’36,” “The Travelling Players,” and “The Hunters” constitute a cycle – the “tragic cycle of history’s failure, which he attempted to present to the audience, in order to help them avoid it in the future.”
Angelopoulos’ “history trilogy” was followed by another, but this one was more “silent”- “Voyage to Cythera,” “The Beekeeper” and “Landscape in the Mist.” But just before this, the Greek director also did “Alexander the Great,” believed to be his masterpiece.
The program pays special tribute to Angelopoulos, not only as a person but also as a director. It’s also a reminder to the film-goers that the Trilogy of Silence “searches for a flickering political light, which burns, as long as these works are remembered.”
The renowned director was also awarded at Cannes and the Venice Film Festival.
