Country's Two Main Parties Barely Reach 30% says Opinion Poll

The days of the two-party system in Greece are numbered, according to a new opinion poll carried out by GPO for the television channel Mega. The poll shows that the two major parties to have governed the country since 1974, the year the Regime of the Colonels fell, barely reach 30%.

New Democracy, the centre-right party led by Antonis Samaras, confirms its position at the top of the standings with 18.2%, ahead of the Socialist party PASOK, today headed by the former Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos, with 14.2%.
The Communist Party of Greece is in third position with a potential 8% of the vote, ahead of Independent Greeks (Anexartiti Hellines), the new centre-right party formed by a number of former New Democracy MPs kicked out for voting against the second aid package for Greece.
Syriza, the second largest left-wing party, comes next with 6.2% of voter preferences, ahead of Democratic Left (5.9%), the far-right LAOS (4%) and another far-right party, Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) with 3.1%.
A number of minor parties have ratings below the 3% mark. Some 29.4% of those interviewed were unable or unwilling to respond, while 63.3% said that they preferred a coalition government, and 28.1% opting for a single-party executive.
