The Costakis Collection to be Presented at the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin

The successful exhibition “Building the Revolution: Architecture and Art in Russia 1915-1935”, which has been presented in the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the La Caixa Forum in Barcelona and Madrid, and in Thessaloniki, where it all began in 2008, now travels to Berlin.

The exhibition will be presented to the German audience at the Max Gropius Bau from April 5 to July 9, 2012.

The exhibition is organized by the State Museum of Contemporary Art-Costakis Collection, Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts, London, the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin, and the participation of the Schusev State Museum of Architecture, Moscow.

From its first presentation to the Greek public in Thessaloniki, the exhibition had attracted the interest of historians, curators and European Museums, since it presents the history and perception of Russian architectural constructivism and avant-garde, as well as the interaction between art and architecture.

The exhibition is the result of extremely important scientific research conducted by three different sources. The Schusev State Museum of Architecture, Moscow, has provided the exhibition project with the precious historic documents and archives from its collection. British photographer, Richard Pare, travelled to Russia to record the current state of the buildings in question and developed a unique archive raising questions on how modern monuments should be preserved. The Greek State Museum of Contemporary Art presented material from the Costakis Collection recording the link between art creations and architectural innovations.

Curators of the exhibition in Berlin include Maria Tsantsanoglou from the State Museum of Contemporary Art of Thessaloniki, director of artistic programmes Maryanne Stevens and photographer Richard Pare from the Royal Academy of Arts and the Schusev State Museum of Architecture of Moscow.
