German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble said Monday that the euro zone may not grant Greece a fresh bailout, unless the country can take the required steps to get its economy and finances in order.
“Unless Greece implements the necessary decisions and doesn’t just announce them…there’s no amount of money that can solve the problem” said Schauble in an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Monday.
Last week German officials raised the idea of appointing a European “budget commissioner” with veto power over Greece’s budgets.
Evangelos Venizelos, Greece’s finance and deputy prime minister, said Sunday that such a measure was unnecessary.
Schauble also dismissed the idea of a bigger euro-zone bailout fund and said his government is doing the best it can to help support growth in Germany.
