International 'Theo Angelopoulos' Prize to Be Established in Honor of Greek Filmmaker

The Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in collaboration with the Film Festival of Thessaloniki, decided to establish an International ‘Theo Angelopoulos’ Prize to honor the Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos, who passed away on Tuesday night.
According to the announcement by the Greek Ministry, the prize will be given within the framework of the Thessaloniki Film Festival every year.
Having influenced a whole generation of filmmakers within and beyond borders, Angelopoulos was widely regarded as Greece’s most important working filmmaker. In view of his passing, Culture Minister Pavlos Geroulanos released a farewell note to “a monumental ambassador of the country’s culture [whose passing] gives true meaning to the word ‘irreplaceable'”.
After a decision taken by the Greek Minister of Culture, Pavlos Geroulanos, the funeral ceremony of Theo Angelopoulos is going to be held using government expenditure at the 1st cemetery of Athens.
