Republic of Cyprus Undertakes European Security and Defence Duties

Cyprus undertook duties relating to European Security and Defence Policy as of January 1st, 2012, as Denmark took over the EU Presidency.
Cyprus Defence Minister Demetris Eliades stated that Denmark is not participating in the running of European Security and Defence Policy. As a result, Cyprus will undertake many issues and actions within that sector of EU policy, since their role as EU President commences on July 1st, 2012.
The Minister of Defence pointed out that the Ministries of Greece and Cyprus are coordinating and planning the safety of the Cyprus’ EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone).
Finally, referring to his visits to France and Belgium, and the meetings he had with his counterparts, Eliades said that they have expressed the support of their countries on all issues concerning Cyprus. “He concluded that all issues on which he had placed demands for cooperation had received an immediate and effective response.
