A former Turkish prime minister is denying that he alleged that government agents set forest fires in Greece, Turkey’s traditional foe, in the early 1990s.
The Turkish newspaper Birgun reported that Mesut Yilmaz referred in an interview last week to “state secrets” that included “forest retaliation against Greece.”
Yilmaz said Monday he was misquoted and that he was referring to alleged reports that Greek agents set forest fires in Turkey, not the other way around.
Greece’s Foreign Ministry says the report is serious and that Turkish authorities should investigate it.
