Greek Diamond Ring Thief Sentenced to 5 Years in Jail

32-year-old Greek George Georgiou from Northcote Melbourne was sentenced to 5 years and 3 months in jail for stealing a $1 million diamond ring in March 2009 from the CBD jewellery store Hardy Brothers Jewellers and then attempting to sell it in Thailand for just $300,000.

According to Victorian County Court Judge Margaret Rizkalla the former Freemason has a history of theft and is addicted to gambling.

The smash-and-grab  planned burglary Georgiou was involved in was not his only offence. In 2008 Georgiou was charged of stealing a diamond ring worth $26,995 from a stall at Camberwell Market.

Georgiou pleaded guilty for both cases and has already served 2 years’ jail in pre-sentence detention. However, he must complete 3 years and 6 months of jail before being eligible for parole.
