Opposition Leaders Accuse Greek PM of Blackmail

Antonis Samaras turned down Prime Minister George Papandreou’s appeal for a referendum on the debt deal Greece agreed with its euro zone partners last week, accusing the Greek PM of blackmailing Greek people. Mr. Samaras is due to meet with President Karolos Papoulias on Tuesday and he’s going to repeat his call for general elections-again. In fact there are sources arguing Mr. Samaras is considering to ask ND deputies to resign in order to boycott Parliament and cause elections. ND spokesman Yiannis Michelakis accused Mr. Papandreou that he’s ” tossing Greece’s future in Europe in the air like a coin.”
Aleka Papariga, the Communist Party leader also opposed to a referendum and called for general elections. “It’s a blatant blackmail of  the Greek people,” said KKE spokesman Makis Mailis. The Radical Left (SYRIZA) leader, Alexis Tsipras dismissed Papandreou’s initiative as a “trick.” Democratic Left chief Fotis Kouvelis also rejected the referendum and questioned whether the Greek constitution actually allows a referendum focusing on fiscal matters.
