Statue of Spyros Louis in Melbourne

A statue of Spyros Louis, the legendary marathon gold medal runner of the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, will be set up in Berwick, Melbourne, next to the statue of another legend, Edwina Flak, who even ran with him in the marathon.

The statue, which will be financed by the state government, symbolizes the friendship between Australia and Greece.

The initial idea belonged to the Greek National Organization for the Support of the Olympic Games and the Olympic Idea, leaded by Panagakis Aristidis, according to whom Louis will be presented with the classic “foustanela”.

It is the first statue of Spyros Louis to be erected at the municipality of Sydney.
