Pawnbrokers’ Business Thriving As Crisis Hits

The economic crisis and the high price of gold benefited the pawnbrokers. According to the newspaper “Eleftheros Typos”, in the region of Attica there are nowadays 114 pawnshops, while their turnover reaches 14 million euros. In the first half of 2011 the demands for pawnshops permits trebled.
Pawnbrokers say that for the first time they see middle class people coming to their stores, while until recently the majority was poor people or unemployed.  As it seems, people who have lost their jobs have no other choice than selling their jewellery, in order to make a living.
