Actions to Facilitate the Immigration of Greeks to Australia

Members of the Melbourne and Victoria Greek Orthodox Community Delegation, expressed their satisfaction on their meeting with the Australian Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Bowen, to discuss the immigration of Greek citizens in Australia.
More specifically, the discussion was focused on issues faced by Greek citizens who want to immigrate to Australia. Mr. Bowen was positive on the proposals made on behalf of the Community.
Among other things, the Ministry of Immigration intends to promote the signing of a bilateral agreement with Greece allowing Greek tourists to work when visiting Australia and vice versa.
At the same time, Mr. Bowen agreed to organize a Skills Expo in Greece with the participation of the Ministry of Immigration, and Australian Businesses, during which, Greek citizens who wish to immigrate to Australia will be able to obtain relevant information and discuss their employment perspectives with Australian employers. Furthermore, Mr. Bowen also agreed to publish information regarding immigration in Australia in Greek. Moreover, the Australian Minister stated that he will investigate the issue to achieve better staffing in competent Australian immigration and diplomatic agencies in Greece and whether there is a need to increase human resources and working hours.
Furthermore, he committed to examine the issue regarding problems faced by Greek Australians in their efforts to bring family members to Australia.
During the meeting, the delegation handed a memorandum to the Minister, including a series of proposals to address existing problems.
Community President, Mr. Vassilis Papastergiadis expressed his satisfaction on the Mr. Bowen’s positive response.
