’60 Minutes’, Behind-the-scenes travelogue to holy Mt. Athos (video)

Last night on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” viewers were able to watch as correspondent, Bob Simon journeyed to the remote peninsula in North Greece to the ancient Holy Mountain Athos.
Holy Mountain Athos is an over a thousand-year-old sanctuary with over 20 monasteries and some 2,000 monks. It is regarded as the most sacred place on Earth and was set aside by ancient emperors to be the spiritual capital of Orthodox Christianity.
It wasn’t an easy task to get access, journalist’s are not permitted- the last one was permitted entry in the ’80s- and CBS admitted that they had been pleading to get in for over two years. It wasn’t until a few months ago that they were permitted but that would not be their only challenge.
The peninsula is only reachable by boat and the surrounding seas are known to be rough. It’s believed that the Virgin Mary herself was shipwrecked there. CBSNews.com reported that the “60 Minutes” team was also stranded on Mt. Athos when heavy seas hit after the two-week shoot ended.
