Over 20 Protesters Hospitalized After Keratea Waste Plans Riot

Greek riot police clashed with residents of Keratea, a town outside Athens, who were protesting against plans concerning the creation of a landfill for the storage of the capital’s waste. It is said that more than twenty people were injured on Thursday. Police and public health officials mentioned that three riot policemen and at least twenty suspected protesters were hospitalized after the clashes. Protesters attacked riot police with rocks and firebombs. Police responded with tear gas, which wafted through the town, sending residents scurrying for cover. Earlier, another group of demonstrators cut a shoulder-high trench across a highway outside Keratea. It was also reported that the house of a couple working for the police and living in Keratea was attacked with molotov bombs. The man is the commander of the Glyka Nera police station and his wife serves at the police station of Keratea. The attack led to the destruction of three cars, parked near the house. Keratea residents first set up road blocks in December, demanding authorities to abandon the plans for the dump.
