Since September 29th, 2010, when the exhibition: “Cyprus: Crossroads of Civilizations” opened to the public and up to December 4th, 1,000,748 visitors came to the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Observers had the opportunity to view the Cypriot treasures, according to the Museum.
The exhibition which features more than 260 pieces ranging from antiquity to the end of the Venetian period, continues to attract thousands of visitors every day.
The Department of Antiquities, the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus, the Pierides – Marfin Laiki Bank Museum, the Thalassa Museum of the Municipality of Ayia Napa, the Byzantine Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation and the Holy Bishopric of Morphou, all contributed with artifacts to the exhibition, making this huge success possible.
Events accompanying the exhibition, to promote Cyprus and its culture, are also taking place. On the 16th of November 2010, Professor Stuart Swiny, Director of the Institute of Cypriot Studies at the State University of New York at Albany, gave a lecture in Washington on the history of Cyprus under the title: “Timeless Cyprus”.
In another event, titled “Cyprus: Culinary Crossroads of the Mediterranean”, on the 8th of December 2010, Dr. William Woys Weaver, Food Historian and Director of the Keystone Center for the Study of Regional Foods in Devon, Pennsylvania, explained how the various cultures that have passed through Cyprus, have influenced traditional Cypriot cuisine. At the same event, wine specialist Dr. George J. Soleas, Vice-President of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (Logistics and Quality Assurance Divisions) based in Toronto, Canada, presented the wines of Cyprus since antiquity, with special reference to the history of Commandaria and the method of production.
The large number of people who attended the events had the opportunity to learn about Cypriot culture and visit the exhibition.
Additional events will be held until the closure of the exhibition in May 2011 at the National Museum of National History. The events focus on the history and culture of Cyprus.
