Braila 5th Elementary School Renamed Nikos Kazantzakis

Braila is the city that give birth to Panait Istrati (Gerasimos Valsamis), also known as “Gorky of the Balkans”.  The city will be “hosting” his best friend, Nikos Kazantzakis.
The old Greek Braila School which operates today as a 5th Elementary School, will bear from now on the name of the greatest Greek thinker.  The desicion follows a proposal of the Greek community in the city to the local authorities in charge of the school. The re-naming ceremony of the school will take place on December 6th.
This year on St. Nicholas Feast, the: “Greek school of Braila will no longer exclusively belong to the cultural heritage of Greeks in the city, but it will bind the spirit of Kazantzakis with the Danube River”, stated the president of the Hellenic community, Constantinos Karavias.
The Greek Braila School was built in the early 20th century.  Until the nationalization of 1948, it operated as a boys school and mixed school of the Greek community it belonged to. After the events of 1989, the revived community launched the procedures for the return of its properties which has not been concluded.
The school today hosts Greek language courses taught by a detached teacher from Greece.
