“Kallikratis” Plan Voted in Principle

The Greek government’s plan to redraw local government boundaries, better known as “Kallikratis,” was voted in principle by the House. Of the 285 deputies present, the 160 deputies of the ruling party of PASOK and the three independent parliamentarians, Sofia Sakorafa, Giannis Dimaras and Vassilis Oikonomou, cast a positive ballot. The 124 opposition deputies said no, apart from independent parliamentarian Dora Bakoyannis who voted “present.” The debate on the plan continued on Thursday, with main opposition New Democracy President Antonis Samaras slamming the government arguing that the “Kallikratis” plan was based upon petty party expediencies. Interior Minister Giannis Ragousis dismissed ND’s disagreement as ostensible, further stressing that the government’s plan is a huge venture that will bring forth a radical governance model.
The debate will go on with deputies focusing on each article separately.
