25th of April: Chicago’s 2010 Greek Independence Day Parade

4444The 46th annual Chicago Greek Independence Day Parade will take place on the 25th of April on Halsted Street in Greek town, which is commemorating the 189th Anniversary of Greek Declaration of Independence, March 25, 1821. This year’s theme is Elefteria -“Freedom – ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ“.
Since 1964, it has attracted a vast number of Chicago and national participants. One of the biggest events of Chicago’s Greek community is the annual celebration of Hellenic identity and commemoration, through which all Hellenes can express and promote their culture and achievements to the City of Chicago and the world. The idea of family and attachment to the Greek Orthodox Church remains strong among the Greek Americans. Colorful, traditional costumes and ethnic pride of both young and old will fill the streets.
This Parade recognizes the Legacy of Greece and our Spirit in America: Freedom and Democracy for all. As we honor our ancestors’ sacrifices that freed, protected and preserved the ideals of Greece. This event is celebrated in every corner of the world and we bare the responsibilities as our Greek and Phil Hellenic forefathers did to further this Legacy.
