A dead body was discovered hidden in a suitcase that was left in plain sight in a residential area of Greek capital Athens on Sunday.
Police officers were reportedly alerted by a 29-year-old foreigner who noticed a strong smell and saw human fingers protruding from a suitcase left on the pavement in the Agios Panteleimon area of central Athens. The man went to the local police station to report the find.
Forensics were called to the scene as soon as police officers opened the suitcase and confirmed there was a dead human body inside.
According to local media, sources suggest that the body belongs to a woman.
The gruesome find is reminiscent of a different case in July 2026, when a body was discovered within a suitcase in an abandoned building in Athens’ Kypseli neighborhood, which is adjacent to Agios Panteleimon.
That body was later identified as British national Elisabeth Jane Ross, a charity volunteer from Scotland who had gone missing a few days earlier. An Afghan man, married to one of the victim’s friends, was arrested and charged with murder and robbery after authorities obtained CCTV footage of the suspect carrying the suitcase with her body and using her bank cards.
The suspect admitted to transporting Ross’s body and using her bank cards after her death but denies killing her, claiming he found her already dead in the apartment where she had been staying.
