The Hellenic Police are investigating the grim discovery of a dead body found inside a suitcase at a central Athens neighborhood on Saturday.
The body reportedly belongs to a petite woman about 30 years of age, dressed in shorts and with her red hair styled in a bun.
The authorities are reviewing missing person cases to determine the identity of the woman, including the case of 50-year-old missing Chinese interpreter Yu Ting who went missing in Athens in May.
Dead woman remains found in suitcase in abandoned building
The horrid find was made at around 2pm local time by a homeless man who discovered the suitcase in an abandoned building on Evelpidon street in Kypseli, according to local reports. The man was alerted by a dreadful smell and notified police authorities who arrived to the building and opened the suitcase, according to Greek public broadcaster ERT.
The area was cordoned off by police forces as forensic investigators rushed to the crime scene.
It was later confirmed that the suitcase contained the body of a woman in an advanced state of decomposition. A post-mortem examination is expected to determine both the time and cause of the woman’s death.
The investigation has been assigned to the Directorate for Combating Organised Crime, AMNA reports.
Located in central Athens, Kypseli is one of the most densely populated neighborhoods of the Greek capital, and one of the earliest to have undergone urban development. It occupies much of the 6th municipal department of the municipality and had a population of around 100,000 in the 2001 census.
Evelpidon street, where the suitcase was found, lies on the boundaries with Gkyzi neighbourhood, and in close proximity of the Court of Athens on the same street.
