A rare albino roe deer in Northern Greece has returned safely to the wild after surviving a severe car accident. The young female animal collided with a vehicle on a provincial road in the Imathia region two weeks ago.
The driver immediately contacted the local forestry department to report the collision. Forestry officials rushed to the scene to rescue the injured creature before contacting the ANIMA Wildlife Protection Association.
Association members coordinated an emergency rescue bridge to transport the deer directly to a nearby veterinary clinic. Veterinarians successfully stabilized the animal before moving it to an isolation chamber for critical recovery care.
Battling severe brain trauma and vision loss
Medical examinations confirmed that the patient was a two-to-three-year-old female roe deer with a rare genetic condition. The animal has complete albinism, giving it a snow-white coat, pink eyes, and light pink hooves.
Despite this distinctive physical condition, the albino deer had successfully survived into adulthood in its natural habitat. However, the impact of the car crash caused severe head trauma and total temporary blindness.
The disoriented animal walked in continuous circles, causing great anxiety among the specialized medical staff. The team kept the deer in absolute isolation to minimize stress and promote neural healing.
Returning the fairy-tale creature to the mountains
The white deer made a spectacular and complete recovery during its fifteen-day stay at the rescue center.
Its vision returned fully, and all neurological symptoms disappeared as the brain swelling decreased over time. Once the deer achieved perfect health, ANIMA directors organized its formal release alongside Imathia forestry rangers. The team transported the animal back to the specific mountain foothills where it spent its life.
The deer sprinted away and vanished into the thick green bushes the moment the handlers opened the enclosure. Wildlife experts expect this unique creature to continue its life normally despite the brief domestic interruption.
