Severe storms brought flooding, fallen trees and travel disruption across Greece on Wednesday, October 14. Skiathos suffered extensive damage overnight, while Evia remained under a red weather alert as heavy rain and powerful winds continued to threaten communities.

The storm prompted emergency warnings, school closures and ferry restrictions. Authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from flooded roads and streams.

Flooding and Damage on Skiathos

Floodwater swept through central Skiathos, inundating roads, shops and homes. Two parked cars were carried away by rushing water, according to Mayor Thodoris Tzoumas. Fallen trees and blocked roads also disrupted movement around the island.

The municipality said it planned to request an official state-of-emergency declaration as it assessed the damage. The full extent of the destruction was not yet clear on Wednesday morning.

All schools on Skiathos remained closed, and the island’s scheduled bus services were suspended for the day. A 112 emergency alert urged residents and visitors to limit travel to essential journeys.

Evia Under Red Weather Alert

Evia remained under a red weather warning through late Wednesday afternoon. Early in the morning, authorities sent another 112 alert to residents in Politika, urging caution during travel.

Heavy rain also caused flooding and damage in parts of the island. Reports said a bridge collapsed in the northern Evia area, while emergency crews responded to fallen trees and other incidents.

The Fire Service received 58 calls across Attica and Evia between late Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday. In Attica, crews carried out nine water-pumping operations and removed 15 fallen trees. In Evia, they removed 19 fallen trees and cleared a road.

Ferry Restrictions and School Closures

Strong northeasterly winds reached force 9 and temporarily force 10 on the Beaufort scale in parts of the Aegean. A sailing ban at Piraeus and Lavrio was reported to remain in place until 3 p.m., although some services operated and departures from Rafina were expected to proceed normally.

Schools were closed in Skiathos, Skopelos, parts of Evia and several island regions. Forecasters expected conditions to improve gradually from Wednesday night into Thursday, but travelers were advised to check with ferry operators and local authorities before setting out.
