President Donald Trump announced Sunday, October 11, that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate ceasefire targeting energy infrastructure, although Ukrainian officials indicated they had not been informed of any such agreement.

“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The announcement appeared to catch Ukrainian officials by surprise, raising questions about whether a formal agreement had been reached between Moscow and Kyiv.

A source close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that Ukraine would agree to such an arrangement if Russia did the same.

“We just read it as you did,” another Ukrainian official said when asked about Trump’s statement, according to CNN.

Uncertainty Surrounds Trump’s Announcement

The White House and Kremlin had not immediately provided details about how the reported agreement was negotiated or what mechanisms would ensure its implementation.

Trump’s announcement followed recent discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and a controversial agreement allowing Russian diesel supplies to enter international markets.

The arrangement drew criticism from Zelensky, who warned that easing restrictions on Russian energy exports could provide Moscow with additional revenues to finance its military operations against Ukraine.

Negotiations involving senior American and Ukrainian officials, including Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, also began in Miami on Friday.

Tensions between Washington and Kyiv intensified Saturday when Trump suggested that Ukraine needed new leadership capable of negotiating an agreement.

Zelensky Signals Willingness to Halt Energy Strikes

Earlier Sunday, Zelensky expressed support for a reciprocal halt to attacks on energy infrastructure during an interview with ABC News.

“OK, if they want energy ceasefire, we are open for this,” Zelensky said, referring to Russia.

“Don’t attack us. Don’t kill our children. We will stop attacking your diesel. And I think it’s fair, fair deal.”

Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly targeted each other’s energy facilities, including oil refineries and other critical infrastructure, contributing to disruptions in global energy markets.
