US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are meeting in Washington on Thursday as the two countries seek to keep their fragile trade truce in place.
Xi arrived in Washington on Wednesday for a three-day state visit, his first visit to the US capital in more than a decade. Trump personally welcomed the Chinese president at Joint Base Andrews, a rare gesture for a visiting foreign leader.
The meeting comes after Washington and Beijing agreed to extend their temporary trade agreement until January 10, 2027. The extension gives both sides more time to negotiate unresolved trade issues.
Trade Remains at the Center
Trade is expected to dominate the talks between the two leaders.
The US and China have spent the past year reducing some of the tensions created by their tariff dispute, but major disagreements remain. Rare earth supplies, agricultural purchases and technology restrictions are among the issues still under discussion.
Artificial intelligence is also becoming an increasingly important part of the relationship. Washington and Beijing are discussing ways to maintain communication over AI-related risks while competing over advanced technology.
Taiwan and Iran Also on the Agenda
The two presidents are also expected to discuss major geopolitical issues, including Taiwan and Iran.
China continues to oppose US arms sales to Taiwan, while Washington maintains its longstanding policy of supporting Taiwan’s ability to defend itself. Iran is another point of discussion, with the US seeking greater Chinese cooperation over the conflict.
Xi’s state visit continues through Friday, September 25, with a formal White House ceremony, a state dinner and a visit to the National Archives among the scheduled events.
