Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held separate talks with the leaders of Armenia, Senegal and Canada in New York on September 23, 2026, discussing economic cooperation, the next UN secretary-general and closer Canada–EU ties. The meetings took place during the high-level week of the 81st UN General Assembly.
Greece and Armenia discuss closer economic cooperation
In his meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Mitsotakis examined opportunities to expand economic ties and strengthen bilateral relations. According to the Armenian prime minister’s office, both leaders expressed readiness to deepen cooperation and emphasized the importance of reciprocal high-level visits.
The discussion also covered Armenia’s relations with the European Union and regional cooperation initiatives.
Senegal talks address the next UN secretary-general
Mitsotakis and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye reviewed relations between their countries and opportunities to strengthen cooperation. They also discussed challenges facing both nations and the wider international community, according to a Senegalese presidency statement reproduced by public broadcaster RTS.
The selection of the next UN secretary-general was another subject of the meeting, with the leaders discussing its implications for the organization’s future.
Canada meeting focuses on AI, space and energy
In a separate meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Mitsotakis discussed bilateral and European affairs, with particular emphasis on strengthening cooperation between Canada and the European Union. Artificial intelligence, space and energy were identified as areas of shared priority, according to the Greek prime minister’s office.
The leaders also considered cooperation in the context of Greece’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union, scheduled for July through December 2027.
The six-month rotating presidency gives the country holding it responsibility for chairing most Council meetings, coordinating legislative work and helping member states reach agreements. Greece will follow Ireland and Lithuania, its partners in the three-country presidency group covering July 2026 through December 2027.
