Museums, archaeological sites and monuments across Greece will welcome visitors free of charge this weekend as the country takes part in the European Heritage Days 2026.
The free admission applies on Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27, to archaeological sites, museums and monuments that belong to the Greek state and are managed by the Ministry of Culture.
The initiative forms part of the European Heritage Days, which take place in Greece from September 25 to 27 and are being held for the 30th consecutive year.
A Weekend Dedicated to Heritage
This year’s European theme is “Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine.” The program focuses on the challenges facing natural and cultural heritage, including environmental, social and technological pressures.
Greece will mark the occasion with a wide range of activities, including guided tours, educational programs, exhibitions, performances and other cultural events. Many activities will take place in person, while others will be available digitally.
The free-admission weekend offers visitors an opportunity to explore some of Greece’s most important archaeological and cultural sites without paying an entrance fee.
The measure follows the established annual practice of offering free admission on the last weekend of September for the European Heritage Days.
Museums and Archaeological Sites Across Greece
The free admission covers state-owned museums and archaeological sites under the management of the Ministry of Culture. This includes major museums and archaeological locations across Athens and the rest of Greece.
Among the sites taking part are institutions such as the National Archaeological Museum, as well as archaeological sites and museums throughout the country. The National Archaeological Museum, for example, normally charges admission during the summer season, but its visitors can enter free of charge on the European Heritage Days weekend.
The program also includes special events organized by individual museums and archaeological services.
At the Acropolis Museum, which operates independently from the state museums covered by the general free-admission measure, visitors will be able to enter the exhibition areas free of charge on Sunday, September 27, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The museum is also presenting a special European Heritage Days program exploring daily life in an ancient Athens neighborhood.

The European Heritage Days provide more than free admission. Their broader aim is to bring the public closer to the places, objects and traditions that form part of Europe’s shared cultural heritage.
