The U.S military completed a wave of strikes against Iranian military targets on September 1, amid renewed hostilities around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The operation targeted facilities and equipment belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including air-defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities, and communications facilities according to a U.S Central Command release.
The Command said the strikes followed recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American military personnel stationed in the region.
More than 50,000 U.S. service members are currently operating across the Middle East, CENTCOM added, saying American forces remain prepared to carry out additional operations ordered by President Donald Trump.
Iran retaliates with missiles and drones
Iran responded to the American operation by launching ballistic missiles toward Jordan, where U.S. troops are stationed.
Jordan’s military said its air defenses engaged 13 ballistic missiles, intercepting ten, while three fell in unpopulated areas. No casualties were reported. Iranian media also reported drone operations against American interests elsewhere in the region.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned that the American attacks would be answered, while Trump threatened substantially stronger strikes if Tehran continued retaliating.
The renewed exchange of fire followed approximately a month without major military action. On August 30, the U.S. military struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island that the U.S. said were intended to deploy sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran subsequently fired missiles at American facilities in Jordan, according to U.S. and regional officials.
Reports of civilian casualties
Iranian authorities accused the United States of striking civilian locations along the country’s southern coast.
A local Iranian official told The Associated Press that a strike hit a house hosting a wedding in Kuhestak, Hormozgan province, killing five people, including a child, and injuring at least 68 others. Iranian state television also reported strikes near Jiroft Airport and damage to parts of the regional electricity network.
A U.S. military spokesperson said American forces do not target civilians.
Strait of Hormuz remains at center of conflict
The escalation has intensified concerns over commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
Two ships were reportedly attacked in and around the strait on August 31. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said one tanker was struck by three projectiles, while a separate incident involved another tanker and military forces off Oman. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, carrying around one-fifth of internationally traded oil during peacetime. Disruption to shipping has contributed to rising oil and fuel prices and heightened concerns about the conflict’s impact on the global economy.
