A baby whose dead body was found in a refrigerated jar kept inside a suitcase during the investigation of a reported non-payment case for a short-let property in Athens, had been stabbed to death, according to a forensic examination.
The case that shocked Greece was unveiled following a complaint by the flat manager who became suspicious of the tenants’ behaviour and their unusual family composition.
One 43-year-old Greek citizen, his pregnant 38-year-old German wife, and the 26-year-old Afghan partner of their also pregnant 15-year-old daughter were present in the flat at the time of the police raid, together with two boys aged 9 and 12, whose identity is being investigated as they have no papers.
Dead baby found in Athens flat suffered stab wounds
After the 43-year-old, the 26-year-old and the 15-year old were arrested for drugs possession, the 38-year-old woman tried to flee the flat with the two boys and the suitcase, which was found by the police to contain the body of a baby in a refrigerated jar.
The woman alleged that the baby was hers and died at 8 months old, but a post-mortem examination was ordered to determine the parents, age, and cause of death of the baby.
It was later found by post-mortem examination that the baby boy had been stabbed to death, his small body having suffered more than ten stabs.
Authorities estimate that the parents had been carrying his refrigerated body in their luggage as they moved flats across the Greek capital, to cover up the crime.
Investigation underway for minors involved in Kypseli flat case
The three minors that were present in the flat are being kept in hospital under police guard, following prosecutor’s orders. Two of them were reportedly diagnosed with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Recording cameras and luggage full of adult entertainment items were also found in the flat, sources said. The property manager told Greek network SKAI TV that the flat had been let for a total 25 days. During this time, there had been complaints by other residents of the building for nuissance coming from inside the flat, which, combined with other observations about the family, triggered suspicion.
DNA tests have been ordered for the three minors as well as for the dead baby.
The incident took place in the Kypseli neighbourhood in central Athens, where last month the dead body of Scottish humanitarian volunteer Elisabeth-Jane Ross was discovered in a suitcase in an abandoned building. An Afghan man captured on CCTV was arrested and charged with that murder two weeks later.
