Drowning Tourist Revived After Remarkable 79 Minutes of CPR on Renowned Greek Island

A 26-year-old Portuguese tourist remains in critical but stable condition after being pulled out unconscious from the sea off Zakynthos, a renowned Greek island in the Ionian Sea, and revived following approximately 79 minutes of CPR. The incident occurred on Friday, August 21 near Korithi, a coastal area in northern Zakynthos.

Swimmers and boat captain pull tourist from sea

Swimmers in the area and the captain of a private tourist boat immediately coordinated to rescue the 26-year-old after he was found unresponsive in the water. They managed to pull him from the sea and bring him aboard the vessel before transporting him to the nearby port of Agios Nikolaos Volimon in northern Zakynthos.

A member of the Hellenic Coast Guard from the local Agios Nikolaos Volimon station was present during the operation.

Doctor begins CPR on tourist at Zakynthos port

When the vessel reached the port, a private doctor who was at the scene immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

An ambulance crew from EKAB, Greece’s national emergency medical service, subsequently arrived and took over the resuscitation effort. Paramedics continued advanced CPR and administered the necessary medication as they worked to restore the man’s vital functions. According to information about the incident, CPR continued for approximately 79 minutes before the 26-year-old regained signs of life.

Following the successful resuscitation, the Portuguese tourist was immediately transferred to Zakynthos General Hospital. He was intubated and admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, where he remains in critical but stable condition.
