Diesel prices in Greece climbed sharply in July, posting one of the largest monthly increases recorded across the European Union, according to new data from Eurostat. Prices rose 12.1% compared with June, placing Greece third among the bloc’s 27 member states, behind only Poland at 13.4% and Germany at 12.7%.
Across the European Union as a whole, diesel prices increased by an average of 4.3% in July compared with the previous month, while petrol rose by 4.7%. The gains followed a sharp decline in June, when diesel prices across the bloc fell 6.4%, and petrol dropped 4.2% from May levels.
Diesel prices rose in 17 EU countries between June and July and fell in nine others. Aside from the leaders, the steepest drops were recorded in Cyprus, where prices fell 7.9%, followed by Sweden at 7.4% and Ireland at 6.4%.
Greece’s July diesel price surge outpaces the Euro area
Petrol prices told a different story in Greece. While diesel surged, petrol edged up just 0.3% over the same period, far below the EU average. Fourteen countries recorded petrol increases and twelve saw declines.
Poland again led the gains at 17.2%, followed by Germany at 11.0% and Spain at 7.1%. Sweden posted the largest petrol price drop at 11.1%, with Cyprus down 5.4% and Ireland down 4.1%.
The scale of the increase stands out against the euro area average, which recorded a 4.0% rise in diesel prices for the same period, meaning costs in Greece grew roughly three times faster than the currency bloc’s typical pace.
The July jump in diesel prices in Greece also marks a reversal from June, when prices had fallen more than 7% from the previous month. Eurostat’s figures come from the “Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices,” which tracks monthly price movements for goods and services, including fuel, across EU member states.
The data offers the latest snapshot of costs at the pump as fuel prices in Greece and the rest of Europe continue to shift from one month to the next.
