In a heartwarming display of solidarity, humanity, and collective effort, the residents of Roussa—a small village in the Soufli municipality of Evros, Greece—joined forces for a truly special purpose: coming together to build a home from the ground up for a young couple who chose to stay and build their future in the region.

Roussa is an important historic center for the Bektashi Alevi Muslim community of Thrace, home to the centuries-old Tekke of Seyyid Ali Sultan.
In recent years, the region has seen significant institutional developments, with Greece officially recognizing the Bektashi Alevi Muslim religious community of Thrace as a legal entity under private law, headquartered in Roussa.
Against this backdrop, the residents’ spontaneous initiative to support two young locals takes on even greater significance. The decision of a young couple to remain in their homeland, build a home, and lay down roots has effectively become a shared mission for the entire local community.
Praised by the Mayor: “An Example of Humanity”
Soufli Mayor Panagiotis Kalakikos highlighted this inspiring story by sharing video footage of the build online, publicly expressing his admiration for the spirit shown by the people of Roussa.
“There are moments when a picture is worth a thousand words… The video from Roussa is one of them,” Mayor Kalakikos wrote, describing a village acting as “one big family” where everyone contributed wholeheartedly to constructing the residence.
He emphasized that the initiative exemplifies true neighborly solidarity, noting that the people of Roussa refuse to remain mere spectators in their neighbors’ times of joy or need. Instead, they stand beside one another—offering help, sharing workloads, and moving forward together.
“This is the real strength of our land: the power of humanity, solidarity, and love that unites people,” Kalakikos added.
He extended warm congratulations to all residents of Roussa, specifically praising his Bektashi and Alevi fellow citizens for setting an extraordinary example for society.
“When a community has deep bonds, no family is ever alone and no dream is impossible,” he wrote. “A house is built with stones and bricks, but a society is built with love, generosity, and solidarity. Bravo to all of you—you make us proud.”
