Greece began cleaning and conservation work on the iconic marble structures of the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, the only major stadium in the world constructed entirely of marble and the eternal birthplace of the Olympic Flame handover ceremony.
This landmark restoration marks the first systematic conservation and cleaning of the historical monument’s marble in 120 years—dating back to the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896. The Panathenaic Stadium, affectionately known to Greeks as the Kallimarmaro (“beautifully marbled”), stands as a unique monument to both ancient heritage and modern sports history.
The initial phase began at the sphendone (curved end) of the stadium and is scheduled for completion by September 10. This ensures the Kallimarmaro is fully prepared to host the Lighting and Handover Ceremony of the Olympic Flame for the “Dakar 2026” Youth Olympic Games. Works will subsequently expand across the entire stadium throughout 2026.
“The Kallimarmaro—a global monument and symbol of the Olympic revival—will shine once again for the international sports community,” Isidoros Kouvelos, President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee said.
The marble cleaning is supervised by acclaimed architect-archaeologist Manolis Korres and guided by accredited conservators from the Ministry of Culture.
Advanced, Eco-Friendly Conservation Techniques
Petros Synadinos, HOC Member and Head of Mission for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, noted:
“We are witnessing a second revival of the iconic Panathenaic Stadium. Just as in 1896—when private sponsorships enabled its restoration under the supervision of the renowned Ernst Ziller—this new initiative led by HOC President Isidoros Kouvelos and generously funded by Mr. Evangelos Marinakis will safeguard the monument and restore it to its 1896 splendor.”
This initiative includes cleaning the marble, installing a new synthetic track surface to host international events, adding high-definition LED lighting, and reinforcing the electromechanical infrastructure.
The cleaning process utilizes a custom, non-abrasive natural method designed to protect the integrity of the marble surface without causing stress or wear. The procedures are guided by the expertise of distinguished architect and academician Manolis Korres, Honorary Advisor to the HOC on history, culture, and heritage preservation.
The gentle method uses purified water applied through specialized equipment under controlled pressure, ensuring immediate, high-quality results without adverse side effects,” Prof. Manolis Korres explained.
In parallel, work is underway to replace the running track, enabling the stadium to host premier international track and field events once again, including potential Diamond League meets.
