New photographs showing extensive burn damage across Crete’s iconic Preveli Palm Forest have sparked debate over whether Greek authorities are downplaying the true scale of the disaster.
The site is not just a popular tourist destination, but a sanctuary of immense ecological value. Preveli is home to one of Europe’s largest natural stands of the endemic Cretan Date Palm (Phoenix theophrasti), a rare species found almost exclusively in Crete and a few scattered locations in the Aegean and southwestern Turkey. Nestled where the Megalopotamos River meets the Libyan Sea, this unique riverside palm forest forms a distinct microclimate and a delicate ecosystem that has enjoyed Natura 2000 protected status for decades.
Following the wildfire that swept through southern Rethymno in July, official inspections by the Ministry of Environment and regional authorities offered a reassuring narrative. Officials emphasized that the core of the ancient palm grove escaped catastrophic destruction, reporting that the blaze was largely confined to low brushwood along the gorge’s perimeter and that only a small fraction of the total site sustained direct impact.
However, photographic evidence from journalists and eyewitnesses on the ground paints a grimmer picture, with reports suggesting the fire may have swept through up to 80% of the area. Images reveal vast swathes of blackened trunks, scorched earth, and charred vegetation stretching deep into the gorge—a stark contrast to the vibrant green tropical oasis visitors saw just weeks ago.
Flames passed through without destroying the palms outright
Experts, however, emphasize that the severity of the fire’s intensity is key to understanding the true impact. Speaking to Kathimerini, Nikos Georgiadis, Terrestrial Program Manager at WWF Hellas, explained that the forest was not lost:
“From what it seems, the fire did not affect the forest in its entirety and certainly did not burn it completely. It may have covered 80% of its area, as is being said, but the intensity of the fire is of great importance. The damage is entirely different when a fire burns with very high intensity, and much less severe when it simply passes through and singes the trees.”
Georgiadis noted that in much of the forest, the flames passed through without destroying the palms outright, offering a hopeful outlook for natural recovery:
“If it doesn’t burn with extremely high intensity, the palm tree shoots new sprouts again. Even in 2010, when the forest was completely burned, there was re-sprouting,” Georgiadis pointed out, noting that while it took 7 to 8 years after the 2010 disaster, the ecosystem eventually restored itself.
While the visual reality on the ground highlights a deeply scarred landscape, the biological resilience of the Cretan date palm provides a lifeline. Protecting this priceless heritage now depends on strictly controlling access, preventing secondary degradation, and allowing the ecosystem the quiet time it needs to regenerate.
