Greek women claimed all three of Greece’s medals at the World Athletics U20 Championships, with Iouliana Roussou, Evelyn Mitropoulou and Eleni Iakovaki delivering a remarkable showing for the country at the global junior competition.
The three medals—two silver and one bronze—highlight the strength of Greece’s emerging generation of track and field athletes at the global junior championships, which concluded Sunday.
Iouliana Roussou Wins 800m Silver
Roussou produced one of Greece’s strongest performances of the championships, winning silver in the women’s 800 meters in 2:03.08.
The 18-year-old Greek ran an intelligent tactical race and moved into the lead with around 300 meters remaining. She continued to challenge for the title deep into the final stretch before Slovenia’s Ria Remic moved ahead.
Roussou held on for silver, giving Greece its second medal of the championships at that point and adding another major international achievement to her developing career.
Evelyn Mitropoulou Takes Long Jump Silver
Evelyn Mitropoulou also won silver, producing a 6.44-meter jump in the women’s long jump.
The performance established Mitropoulou as one of the leading young long jumpers on the international stage. Her silver also adds to Greece’s particularly strong tradition in the event, which in recent years has been led by Olympic and world champion Miltiadis Tentoglou.
Mitropoulou’s 6.44-meter performance was enough to secure the runner-up position at the World U20 Championships.
Eleni Iakovaki Adds Bronze
The third Greek medal came from Eleni Iakovaki, who added a bronze medal to an already remarkable season.
Iakovaki entered the World U20 championships after winning European U18 gold in the 400 meters and setting a Greek U18 best of 52.38 seconds earlier this summer.
The 17-year-old has emerged rapidly as one of the country’s most promising young athletes, with her progress particularly notable in the 400m and 400m hurdles.
Her success in Eugene further strengthens the impression that Greece has a new generation capable of competing for international medals.
A Promising Generation for Greek Athletics
Greece’s three medals in Eugene are significant not only for the results themselves but for the range of talent behind them.
Roussou’s strength in the 800 meters, Mitropoulou’s performance in the long jump and Iakovaki’s breakthrough in the hurdles give Greek athletics several young athletes to follow as they move toward senior competition.
